Paul Rowe Recognizes and Honours Truth and Reconciliation Week and Orange Shirt Day
Staff & students wore orange in recognition of the history and legacies of the residential school system in Canada.
In June the Canadian government passed legislation to make September 30th a federal statutory holiday called the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day is intended to recognize and honour residential school survivors, their families, and their communities. It also ensures that public commemoration of residential schools' tragic and painful history remains a vital component of the reconciliation process. Following this announcement, PRSD board of trustees voted to designate this day as a non-operational day and declared September 27 to October 1, 2021 as Truth and Reconciliation Week in PRSD schools.
Our school community recognized this important week of observance by taking part in various learning activities including:
playing O’Canada in Cree each morning;
reading the Treaty 8 land acknowledgement daily;
Viewing videos from the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. Video topics of treaties and why “We Are All Treaty People”.
wearing orange shirts;
committing to reading one of the 94 Calls to Action for Truth and Reconciliation on our announcements each day for 94 days.
